What is CLIL?
The CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) method consists in simultaneous teaching of content concerning everyday life or the fields taught and a foreign language. Pupils acquire knowledge in various subjects in a target language. Along with learning the surrounding reality, they master new expressions or vocabulary and it is a natural process – this way we learn our mother tongue, and thanks to CLIL, we can also learn a foreign language!
The use of only textbooks, dictionaries and foreign language CDs for learning foreign languages is helpful, however, it should be taken into account that knowledge gained through these aids will not cover vocabulary from every area of life and will not meet the needs we encounter in various communication situations.
In order to learn a foreign language very well, it is necessary to learn the world through it and use all other methods, such as group collaboration, cognitive workshops or the use of language teaching materials. The use of all of them is an inherent principle of the CLIL method, which significantly speeds up the learning process and minimizes the effort put into it. Thanks to it, one can learn vocabulary in a natural way, not only linearly, but also in a very broad sense. In addition, CLIL is a great way to achieve bilingualism.
The CLIL method is practiced by many bilingual educational facilities.
Children from as early a stage as possible, should be gradually familiarized with foreign languages. Bilingual pre-schools allow them to acquire knowledge from a specific field in addition to picking up a foreign language. The advantages of bilingual pre-schools include properly selected teachers, thanks to which children easily and willingly approach the matter of learning foreign languages. Working in a group allows for intellectual development of children, while teachers ensure that children also learn new words in foreign languages and develop in specific areas thanks to the CLIL method.
Elementary bilingual school
Elementary bilingual school also develops the ability to learn a foreign language on the basis of the CLIL method. The advantage of such educational institutions is the speed at which children acquaint themselves with a foreign language as well as stimulation of the willingness to continue learning. This is due to the proper use of multimedia materials, teaching aids and the organization of all types of team work in a group of students. Choosing a bilingual school will be a great solution both for children who easily manage languages as well as for those who have difficulties learning them. The educational system in which students use two languages helps to master a foreign language to perfection, also in specific fields. Owing to cognitive workshops and group collaboration pupils learn creative thinking. Interactive classes involve the use of teaching aids, school equipment and elements closely related to a foreign language.
The desire to learn languages and develop skills in a specific field allows for an intensive and gradual development of the child. Thanks to this, the pupil will be able to use languages effectively after only a few years of learning! The gradual acquisition of knowledge allows for proper and efficient linguistic development and the avoidance of subsequent deficiencies.
